Despacito is a hit song from Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi along with Daddy Yankee was released in the year 2017. It went on to become the most one streamed music at that time within six month. It was a mixture of pop music and reggaeton has not just brought interest to reggaeton, but also brought attention to Latin music generally. Billboard's Top 100 had four songs mostly in Spanish by 2016 compared to just two songs in 2015. At the peak of Despacito's popularity in 2017 however 19 mostly Spanish songs made it into the top 100 In 2020, there were 41 such songs. Justin Bieber's bilingual version of Despacito was released in 2017. Soon after, famous artists began collaborating with reggaeton artists. Drake collaborated with Bad Bunny on MIA (2018) as well as Madonna was a part of Maluma in the creation of Medellin. A few performers of reggaeton have criticized the shift to popular music by 2020. However, a brand new band, Rauw Alejandro wanted to maintain the development and growth of reggaeton. Rauw Alejandro incorporated electronic dance forms and others into his music.
